Nachdem die Boote zum Wal-Beobachten unendlich teuer sind, ausserdem ein Dinner (nicht noetig) und Schnorcheln (warum?) anbieten und viele Leute auf engem Raum nun wirklich nicht meins sind, sah es lange so aus, als wuerde ich die Insel verlassen, ohne Wale zu sehen. Etwas traurig sass ich also am Strand von Anini und habe ueberlegt, ob es schlauer waere, im Sommer noch nach Alaska zu fahren (auch nicht guenstig), als ploetzlich ein riesiger schwarzer Fischschwanz ein paar hundert Meter vor mir im Meer aufgetaucht ist. Also: Doch Wale! Aber eben sehr sehr klein. Ausser weisser Gischt und schwarzer Flosse war nix erkennbar. Also doch Bootstour? Am Sonntag bin ich dann entlang des Kalalau Trails in Richtung Napali Coast gelaufen. Das waere ein 11 Meilen langer Wanderweg (Matsch und Kliff) zu einem Tal. Weit bin ich nicht gekommen, schon beim Mittagessen sind auf einmal ueberall Wale aufgetaucht. Auch beim zweiten Anlauf Richtung Kalalau Beach waren wieder viele zu sehen. Es schien, dass es gar nicht so sehr darauf ankommt, ob man Wale sieht, sondern nur wann. Wie schoen!

Ever since I realized that you could actually see Whales here I wanted to spot some. But the boattrips are very expensive and include some unnecessary details: Dinner, snorkeling and lots of other people. So it seemed for a long time, that I wouldn’t be able to see any at all. Sitting at the beach of Anini I contemplated, whether I was a good idea to go to Alaska to see them in the summer (also quite an expensive trip) or whether I just invested all that money. When suddenly a black fin showed up right in front of me, a couple of hundred metres away from the beach. Whales! Apart from the odd fin and some white foam nothing could be discerned. But on Sunday I walked along the Kalalau trail (without permit) and during lunch on a sunny cliff I suddenly saw lots of them playing, jumping, beating the waves with their fins. It was an amazing spectacle which I could witness yesterday again, when I tried to get further along the trail. It seemed to me that in the end it is not a question of if but of when you see them here. Lovely!
