Since the trip to Tama Lakes was really easy and felt really good, I had hoped that I would be fit to go on a longer and more strenuous hike with tent. Also one of the first things we bought was the backcountry hut pass – a ticket that allows you to use the widely spread huts all over the country without paying extra. Since the weather was – at last! – to be four days of bright sunshine, we opted for the Holdsworth-Jumbo-Circuit in the Tararua mountains. It normally rains there, so the temptation was too big. Half way up the first hut, someone told us, that the huts on this particular tramp can now be booked beforehand and that both were booked out tomorrow. So I found myself a squaremeter in the forest where I had a signal and called the DOC office to make a booking. The conversation was complicated, not only because my surname is so difficult for english speakers, but also because the connection was not very stable. So in the end we had two beds for the first night, but were to rely on our tent for the second. In the end we did not stay the second night at all, even though the weather was just as fine as it was announced, but I quickly felt very unwell again. So in the end I had to take painkillers again and we descended as quickly as you can, when you carry a heavy backpack and have already walked four hours along a windy ridge. After the descent of 1200 m I wasn’t in a good mood anymore and I still feel sorry for my faithful companion who has to put up with me in these situations. It was a wonderful trip though and it is a great pity, that I am still not well. We will be back (one Valley further on, to avoid the bookable huts! POSTSCRIPTUM: Back at the car I realised, that I had packed the wrong pills. So this shows, that the ones I am supposed to take, work, but that nothing is over.
