Since the weather seemed to love me at the moment, I changed my non existant plans and went into the hills at Arthur’s Pass Village. The hills there are beautiful, there are numerous free campsites and one of them in a really stunnung wide valley. After Nelson Lakes, where the tourist highway actually seems to lead straight over Mt. Robert ridge, this was pure recovery for me. So on the next days I chose to climb Mt. Aicken, because the girl at the DOC office assured me, I would be there alone all day. And I was.

Nachdem das Wetter für die Südinsel nahezu unglaublich stabil ist, bin ich kurzerhand von meinen eh nicht existierenden Plänen abgewichen, um in die Berge um Arthur’s Pass Village zu fahren. Im Gegensatz zum Touri-Magnet Nelson Lakes war ich da relativ alleine. Als das Mädel aus dem DOC office auch noch erzählt hat, dass man auf Mt. Aicken normalerweise mutterseelenallein ist, war die Entscheidung klar. Und tatsächlich: Keine Menschenseele auf einer wunderbaren Gratwanderung inmitten einer traumhaften Landschaft.
